How they work, when to test, how to read them... Let’s take the stress out of testing, and run down the most frequently asked pregnancy test questions together. How does an at-home pregnancy test determine if you’re pregnant? At-home pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in urine. This hormone is produced by your body when an embryo implants into the uterus. 2. How accurate is a pregnancy test? If you follow the test’s instructions properly and take the test after your missed period, most of today’s pregnancy tests are up to 99% percent accurate. Testing earlier reduces the accuracy rate and may cause a false negative. Be sure to check the expiration date of your test before use because they have a shelf life! 3. Which pregnancy tests are the most accurate? Whew, who knew there’d be so many brands out there to choose from, right? Per Consumer Reports, First Response Early Result was rated the best pregnancy test of the 18 brands tested. It can detect very low levels of HCG, which allows for a positive result sooner than competitors. ClearBlue Easy is another noteworthy pick thanks to its easy-to-see lines. 4. How many times should you test? This is a personal choice from mama to mama, but it’s natural to want validation that that big fat positive sign is really true. I took 3-4 for each of my pregnancies, but another mama may be happy with 2. The tests aren’t cheap after all! I do know some women who have taken 7 or 9! 5. What does a positive pregnancy test look like? A positive can be as obvious as the word positive in an easy-to-read window, or it can be a guessing game of “is that a second line or not?” 6. What about those pesky faint lines? You know the ones where you’re left wondering if you’re imagining the line or not? A faint line usually means a positive result if taken properly. You’re more likely to see a faint line with a positive result when testing before your missed period, but you may see them when testing after, too. A faint line can result from a number of things, including a low amount of HCG in the body, a chemical pregnancy, not using your first morning urine, or a hormonal imbalance. If the line is very faint, however, proceed with caution. This may be what’s known as an evaporation line, which is your urine drying on the test. With evaporation lines, the line is more of a grey hue than the standard pink or blue and is usually the result of waiting too long to read the test so be sure to stay within the time window that’s prescribed in your test directions, usually no longer than 3 minutes.. Evaporation lines are a negative result. 7. Will the positive lines get darker each time I take a test? As pregnancy progresses, your body releases more HCG, leading to a darker line on the test. For repeat faded positives, contact your care provider for a blood test to confirm. 8. Is a false positive possible? While false negatives are way more common, false positives happen. Generally this is caused by an underlying condition like cysts, a medication, or a recent miscarriage. 9. Can you still be pregnant despite a negative? Absolutely. Testing too soon, not following the instructions, and low HCG can be to blame for a false negative. If you’re over two weeks late and still haven’t tested positive, a doctor or midwife appointment is a must to rule out any problems. 10. What should I do after a positive test? Congratulations, mama! Now that you have that big, beautiful positive test, it’s time to check off some mama must-dos, like, starting a prenatal vitamin regimen if you haven’t already and contacting your doctor or midwife.
