@Bob-Lob-Lawlast year I went to what I thought was a nude beach once only to find some ladies called the Popo on me because I was on the wrong beach. There I was lying on a blanket soaking up the rays in all my glory when the police walked up on me. They just laughed and said " Ok folks , move along , there's nothing to see here" ... 15

@kirkgarner1last year Thanks, Steve. I'm just a simple country lawyer who also happens to enjoy nudism from time to time. I had read about the Hildebridle case, and had even downloaded a copy to my caselaw files, but I didn't realize until now that Voelker's opinion was a MAJORITY opinion. I saw the first words, "I dissent," and assumed that the convictions had been upheld notwithstanding Voelker's brilliant analysis. I also hadn't made the connection to one of my favorite lawyer movies. ... 6

@SharmClucaslast year I like these legal history stories. They're interesting and don't raise my blood pressure like the modern stuff does. 6

@paulh2981last year Indecent exposure laws are of no purpose other than to protect peoples' feelings. If we use the law to stop some people from doing things that other people would be offended by, where do we draw the line? Everyone is offended by something. ... 4

@jackccrofootjr7228last year I had to smile as I listened to you relating the story about Sunshine Gardens, Battle Creek. I first heard about it in the mid 1960's. My brother and his pal, stole their sign from the main Rd. leading into the campground. It was a stupid prank and my mother made them return it.
About 1972, I had a 14 year old fair skin, blond headed teenaged patient in the hospital whose language skills and social skills far exceeded his years. I entered his closed door room to reapply burn ointment to his skinny pale white buttocks that were severely sunburned.
My curiosity got the best of me and I had to ask???? How did this happen? As he lay there on his stomach au natural (he was extremely comfortable with his nudity) He laughed and said, well..... you see my grandpa owns Sunshine Gardens Nudist Resort, and I am there to spend the summer with him. That area of my body had not been tanned before and I just laid out in the sun too long not realizing how red I was getting because I could not see behind me. What struck me the most was his overwhelming maturity of speech and conversation. I asked was he a little shocked his first day there. He said, not really, after about 2 hours you just forget you and everyone else is nude, and it just seems normal after that. He shared a few funny anecdotes and that was it (mainly the thing most guys would worry about their first time in that situation. The kid had an adult sense of humor and not easily intimidated.)

@StevenEverett7last year I'm curious about something Steve. What's your opinion of the movie "12 Angry Men"? I haven't seen it since the 70s but I recall it being quite good. 3

@loucatozzi7656last year A great bit of American history. I'll give "Anatomy of a Murder" a try. Another courtroom movie I remember from childhood is "12 Angry Men" starring Henry Fonda as a lone disenting opinion on a jury of a murder trial. ...

@lokiva8540last year I also find Steve's local color interesting, but that case had far darker police and judicial misconduct than Steve suggests or admits.
I can picture Dethmers in his role as Eric Cartman, shouting "respect my authoritay!", but with a law degree to pretense his bigotry as if valid grounds to assign mercenary armed gangs to terrorize his subjects. Back then in 1958 SCOTUS was fronting Roth as if valid, whereas Dethmers is also a bit like Potter Stewart declaring which supposed porn gives him hard-ons, but without Justice Stewart's honesty recognizing how the arbitrary and subjective prejudices and emotive reactions aspects of an Austin Powers movie, quizzing "Are you horny baby?", render such issues "void for vagueness" if not other strict scrutiny grounds.
Unlike the judicial fraud of Dethmers and cohorts declaring issues of fact and of law that demand undoing not just Roth and Ring, but successor Miller and Pacifica defects, by declaring facts and law to not be legal issues (where's their anti-psychotic meds and locked ward?), Voelker's opinion is tediously long, beyond that of some awkward ones I've seen explaining why a parent could be locked up for abuse and contempt if he brings kids to some abusive cult church, whose practices fall outside strict scrutiny review of parental or religious rights. The missing link is any process to convict the guilty there, even after protracted analysis.
Voelker doesn't just analyze how alleged indecency isn't valid law, or how police imposed an illegal search and seizure, but a whole soap opera of cops outside their jurisdiction as well as lawful powers, conspiring in a scam as armed criminal kidnappers, in whose crimes prosecutors and lower courts conspired. That outrageous conduct needs to be eradicated, not given immunity based in part of SCOTUS interpreting an incorrect official publication of the Civil Rights Act of 1871, missing 16 key words.
AFAIK the resort involved is currently known as Turtle Lake Resort, with management more business practices oriented than prior family of nudists ownership for decades.

@xfdrtgfdlast year What happened to the video on the movie? I stopped watching it so I could watch "Where the Crawdads Sing" first, now it seems to have disappeared. Anyway, the only thing I heard was that you were disappointed, and I see why. I have to imagine it didn't do justice to the book. ...

@VidNudistKidlast year "Nudist colony" is an outdated term, specifically the "colony" part. They are campgrounds, resorts, retreats, clubs, et c. 1
