what with the gossip girl reboot coming out recently i decided to revisit the original show from 2007 and examine the impact it had on both the tv industry and fashion. its popularity resulted in a huge burst in dramatic teen tv shows (yes, you can thank gossip girl for riverdale) and from headbands to colored tights, gossip girl's impact on fashion in the 2000s was undeniable. which fashion trend popularized by the show was your favorite? intro 0:00 capes 9:39 bubble dresses 10:27 bodycon dresses 11:03 gowns 11:33 preppy style 11:55 maximalism 14:47 headbands 15:15 hats 16:20 silk scarves 16:55 pussybows 17:13 neckties 17:45 cutouts 18:06 ballet flats 18:30 t-strap heels 18:59 knee high boots 19:22 tights 19:48 nightgowns 20:21 chanel 20:46 get in touch 💌 contact@moderngurlz.com follow us! 🌸 https://www.instagram.com/moderngurlz https://www.twitter.com/moderngurlzz https://www.tiktok.com/@ moderngurlz music! 🎶 https://soundcloud.com/yueunseo/future-james-pure-imagination Music by Tarious Hill - Out Of Season - https://thmatc.co/?l=5A8754D3 intro/outro by nicole w.b https://www.instagram.com/nicole_collete_leon/ Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research. @thedaydreamgallery3 years ago Blair Waldorf’s preppy looks will forever be iconic. 7287
  • @
@tauntaun96603 years ago Everyone always talks about Serena’s style but Blair’s style was what stood out in my opinion. It always was purposeful and calculated, like Blair herself. 8993
  • @
@user-us7py1cy2k3 years ago The think I liked about 2000s fashion is that everyone’s style was uniquely their own. It might’ve not been the best but it had a lot of diversity 5574
  • @
@SafE293 years ago 2000s fashion was so bright and colourful. literally everyone looked like characters from totally spies 3276
  • @
@muriel53233 years ago sure enough, blair waldorf carried the show plot wise and fashion wise. in this house, we support blair waldorf supremacy. 1658

@Chuuzus3 years ago Goth Jenny Humphrey was such a moment. 1247
  • @
@AlvaroIbacacheS3 years ago Not mention too many times, but as a men, I love how GG also give style to their male stars, a unique style for every one of them. It was a huge step for me to see how men can also have interest in fashion, develop a style and more important break down some barriers of toxic masculinity regarding menswear. ... 2667

@kellygreengables39363 years ago Something else about the fashion of GG that I don't think enough people talk about is how the fashion for each character is very individual and helps us understand the characters' various circumstances. Serena was experimental while Blair was preppy and conservative, but both still wore big name brands. Characters like Jenny (girly then preppy then goth) or Vanessa (hippie, boho chic) have less money than Blair and Serena and their clothing reflects that. Same goes for the guys and how they would style their uniforms. Did anyone else see this? ... 2890

@Neeeeena3 years ago it's also really cool and i think worth mentioning that the headbands used by unnamed characters in the show also indicated that those girls were on blair's "side" or were influenced by her in some capacity ... 1140

@deanneb69253 years ago I think part of the reason that Blair’s clothes were so 50s-60s inspired because of her idolization of Audrey Hepburn. I’ve never watched the show, but I read most of the books, and Audrey was her style icon. It’s possible that might have influenced her costuming for the show.
As far as trends, as a curvy girl, bodycon dresses will always be a staple for me idc if it’s not in style. I look good!
And my god, those bags were HUGE. I was dragging a ginormous Michael Kors bag around school for no reason 😭 I will definitely not be missing the big bag trend, and my back will thank me for it

@_Alimm3 years ago I was in highschool when Gossip Girl was at it's height and yeah the impact was stronggg even in the hood. All the girls had an assortment of Blair Wardolf-esque headbands and purses. 949

@MichellaneousMe3 years ago Blair’s looks were everything I wanted to have, but could never pull off 649

@candybunny24623 years ago My favorites were Blair's preppy outfits and Jenny's glam rock outfits 630
  • @
@jennawar133 years ago I think it’s so interesting that entire brands come in and out of trend. Now I can’t imagine Chanel falling out of grace and being a “grandma bag”. In that case, grandmothers are just high fashion lol 756
  • @
@ninabellmuse3 years ago Honestly the Tiffany key necklace is the most iconic to me, but mostly because I begged for one and I still have it today! 100% because Blair had one lol. 571

@Reticulating-Splines3 years ago Fact: the late aughts bubble hem looked flattering on NOBODY. Unfortunately I did not know this at the time and selected a bubblegum pink, strapless, empire waist tulle bubble hem dress with white glitter dots adorning the hem, for my 8th grade dance. I remember being annoyed at my dress before the night was out because the hem kept rolling itself up and inside out. I then learned nothing and graduated to wearing a white bubble hem mini skirt with big red polka dots and one of those black chunky belts that were a mile wide for my First Day of High School, 2009. I was traumatized by the stares I got and comments I overheard and never wore it again.
Both instances are great to look back on in pictures.

@KaylaNoelle13 years ago Gossip Girl singlehandedly saved me from so many horrible 2010's trends that I would have regretted now. I do not regret my Blair Waldorf phase and can STILL wear pieces I bought as a 12-year-old and I'm 26 now. I bought a gorgeous houndstooth blazer in like 7th grade that I STILL love. I owe this dumb show my life! ... 184

@candidesque64703 years ago I don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing Blake Lively. She is drop dead gorgeous and super easy on the eye. It helps that she's also really cool and fun. What a queen. 911

@alymarie35123 years ago Jenny Humphrey turning edgy was what made me start learning to sew! I wanted to dress just like her when I was 14 lol 48

@elisaandrade23823 years ago I am a Gen Z girl and I just watched GG because of the classic movies references without expecting anything about fashion because I remembered 2000's fashion more like Disney Channel creepy outfits and just ended completely shocked about the good taste in every selection of clothes. ... 445

@maybe89853 years ago Currently rewatching the series and I still have this crush on Nate.
Notes : The fashion in the first season weren’t for my taste AT ALL especially for Serena. But the party dresses and Blair looks stood out for me

@magicalteddy3 years ago They actually auctioned off a lot of the clothes as the show was airing. I managed to buy (or, my parents did for me) a Gwen Stefani scarf worn by a character in the first episode (and was the actual garment worn in the show). ... 148

@alyssamenezes41443 years ago I dressed like Serena and Jenny’s(season 2 - till her final season) love child. I have no regrets. I went to a private school and the one time I couldn’t find my sweater which was part of the uniform , I just grabbed a cardigan that had skulls on it(because at the time it was the only sweater I had) and while I got chewed out for violating the dress code, I like that I was able to take a risk with clothes and not be afraid to stand out without even thinking. The only regret I have is not having a picture from that day😜 ... 287

@moeblackx3 years ago Blair had such a cool, camp style at sometimes especially the outfits with colored tights or polka dots. She was such an icon 193
  • @
@mk160783 years ago could you do something on the old money aesthetic? i think it would be really interesting to see your perspective on it! 234
  • @
@aileenschumann796last year Inmo Serena always looked like someone else dressed her and she didn’t really care about it. It often felt like her outfits wore her and not the other way around. Blair’s outfits always perfectly matched her mood and symbolized what she was going through in that specific moment. ... 14

@ashleylesiak41143 years ago I had at least 25 headbands after season 2 of the show. My last step before leaving the house was picking the perfect headband to go with my outfit. Every-single-day 83

@roxycocksey3 years ago Ahh the tights trend was my favorite. I visited nyc around the time this show had started and I saw sooo many girls walking around the city with cute tights! @terezipyrope7473 years ago I never realized how much blair's fadhion influenced me til all of the gossip girl videos cropped up. @iusedtowrite66673 years ago Say what you want about the Gossip Girl fashion. But it was definitely influential. I'm not an American and even I wanted to dress up like Blair. 91

@ybwmarion3 years ago I think it a similar video about Skins would be great, although I don't think it really influenced the fashion choices of teenagers but throughout the seasons you can notice the shift from 2000s to the 2010s fashion :)
But thank you very much for this video, I never watched gossip girl but it still was interesting :)

@heidimcdonough3783 years ago 10/10 my favorite video to date. As a younger millennial watching this show, I remember all of these fashion trends being pushed by the characters like they were historic events 😆 when Jenny came back as “dark Jenny” it was such a great look for visual contrast, but the consistency of Serena and Blair’s styling throughout the show was so amazing to watch. Love it 🥰 ... 47
  • @
@thaisgregorio27343 years ago Gossip Girl was so influential that even I, a person who was never interested in the show or books, was heavily influenced by Blair's preppy look, which I love till this day. Bubble skirts/dresses were hideous though, hope they never come back ... 104

@myjunkdrawer80143 years ago This sounds odd but I'd love a glee style analysis. I feel like all of their styles changed so much particularly Rachel and it's the perfect example of the transition from the 2000's to the 2010's. 28

@gievans61063 years ago Jenny definitely had my favorite style (specifically season 3-6) because it was actually Taylor Momsen's style and influenced by her music (which was the reason she left the show.) I may heavily dislike Jenny, but her style is iconic ... 24

@alexandria35833 years ago i never watched gossip girl but i definitely participated in most of these trends. i still have a red wool peacoat from like 2010 that would probably fit perfectly on one of the background characters in gossip girl, maybe a "poor" character since the coat was reasonably priced lol. i also wore a lot of tights/socks and ballet flats. i tried to do a peter pan collared shirt (la zoella) for a little while but i realized i don't like necklines that high. this was kind of the same time as taylor swifts red era so i was also very much inspired by her style at that time ... 76

@Mo-hz9tv3 years ago wow this is actually blowing my mind... i never watched this show but grew up reading magazines like seventeen and teen vogues religiously. always wondered where this specific tacky-bright-vintage-preppy aesthetic of my childhood came from, and why it took me so long to break away and find my personal style. makes so much sense now! ... 13

@MoonShadow3333 years ago I remember I was obsessed with this show during my first and second year of college. I was not into fashion a lot, but I realy liked Blair's style and I embraced that side of me. That, along with my then bff, helped me to find my style, something I was too self aware to do so. I still keep my love for headbands even today hahahaha ... 18

@emilyglass66253 years ago I have this specific memory of the moment I realized tv had not always been hugely fashion-conscious. I never got to watch Tru Calling when it first aired, but then at some point it became available on a streaming service. The main character wore mostly spaghetti-strap tanks and henleys, so it wasn’t super easy to tell if her clothes were expensive, but at some point her sidekick came in and I was like “good grief, that’s polyester from the mall…” Like, it was the kind of top available at my price point, with a contrast waistband that didn’t even go all the way around. It made all the sense in the world that these characters wouldn’t have a lot to spend on clothes, but at this point I had gotten so used to tv ALWAYS being about fashion on some level, regardless of what the characters could realistically afford. ... 13

@bassunderscoreharmonic66893 years ago The thing about classy style is that if you do it right, you'll always stand out. That's why Blair stands out more than Serena, who followed the trends. 38

@florylege3 years ago It is always so nice to see all the best looks of this show, displayed here in an analysis. I personnaly LOVED Blair's outfits because it was so unique and perfectly gathered. And as a fan of the 60s style, I could spot her inspiration of the era in EVERY outfit, there was always a little detail. Also I think Chuck had also the best male style, on an original point of view, the matching was perfect with Blair as he had that preppy chic and colorful dandy look. This show will ALWAYS be iconic for its fashion. ... 20
